How does this rod go in all the way?, it was fine till it slid out when I was moving the trans under the truck to put it in so I put it back in and now it wont let me install the torque converter in all the way.
This is as far as it will go, it needs about 1/4" more.
Im sure it's the shaft, I have another AOD, worn out, I compared the two and it does stick out further. I've posted this problem before and the only answer I get is the converter isnt in all the way, I've had it in as far as it would go and when so, it doesn't turn as smooth an still needs about 1/4" more.

That's not even what he said.
He said ROTATE the torque converter by hand and see if the splines on the inside will allow you to press the shaft in further and get it seated. Have you tried this yet?
We're here to help. The proportion of help that we're able to give is directly related to how nice/courteous the people we're talking to is. Anybody that doesn't show courtesy is pretty much disregarded. We're all friends here that just love these old trucks and love teaching others to love these old trucks and take care of them. It's our hobby and our lifestyle. I can guarantee that if someone rude comes on here, these guys will pretty much black-ball someone, unless they're feeling nice enough to help them regardless of what kind of tone they receive. You would be surprised at the generosity these guys exhibit.
Not ranting, not chewing you out, not scolding you or anything like that, but try to be understanding in that we can only help someone with the information we're given. We can't read minds or be there to show things to you/do it in person.
I'm sure someone else will be along here shortly to help you even further. We've got a few people here who know the AOD transmission, and will probably know what the answer/solution is. Just be patient.
I had a similiar problem with a c4. I took out a 65 c4 and installed a 68 c4, but used the 65 torque converter, no problems, except a couple of years later the 68 tranny went bad. This time I rounded up a 73 c4, and still was using the 65 torque convertor. But this time it would not go together. I finally found out that after around 1970, Ford changed the diameter of the pump shaft ever so slightly, that you can't even tell it unless they are sitting side by side. So I had to buy a new converter so it would slide on all the way and everything then bolted up. Good thing this happened, I didn't realize till later that the old 65 torque converter I kept trying to use was going bad, and that was ruining the trannies I was using.
Just a story, don't know if they ever did anything like this with the AOD or not. If you know all the different years of the parts you are trying to use, you might go to Autozone or some other site that sells trannies and torque convertors, and see if they did any changes. Isn't this the direct drive shaft you are trying to get in place. Is it famous for twisting in two? Maybe they upgraded it sometime?
One ( maybe stupid ) last thought from me . Possibly the gear the shaft fits in inside the mixer has fell down . That would not let it align properly . I DO NOT work on auto trans. But I could see that as a possibility , Maybe ? try rolling the mixer on it's side or standing on end ( Had to do that with a torqueflight once ) Maybe ? just a thought .
That shaft looks completely seated to me. I can see the wear on the shaft where the bushing is and it seems to line up to the bushing in the outer shaft. I know you have spun the converter but did you lift the snout and move it around while you were spinning? I have an AOD and it is a bear to get the converter on correctly. Usually a small lift on the snout and a few turns gets it the rest of the way in.
Good luck. I would measure my wear marks and my bushing depth to comfirm complete engagement.
I came across this today and it has plenty of info. I was just out in the garage trying it one more time, turning, lifting, cussing and even trying it on it's end, I'm getting another one.

Don't believe everything you read. That article says this tranny was available behind a diesel engine. This tranny barely holds up behind a 5.0 v8 unless it's beefed up. It was never offered behind a diesel, and I believe I have heard it was never offered behind the 351w.
