Took my 79 400 stock F250 4X4 to the Calif. smog joint and I was failed because I had installed dual 2" exhaust through dual cat converters and mufflers. Old pipes and muffler were rusted away. Been like that for years, but NOW they decided it's illegal. Grrr...anyway, I removed one cat/muffler,tailpipe and used a 2" to 2" Y pipe from the two engine exhaust pipes. Passed smog fine. My question is, am I choking the exhaust with a single 2" tail pipe? Seems to have fine low end torque but poor high speed power. It's a 2bbl carb and stock exhaust manifold. I know the 400 is kinda doggy, but if it won't help, I hate to shell out bucks for a bigger cat, muffler and pipes.
In my county we don't have to meet any smog test on 81 or older . So on my 73 with a 302 i have duals with straight though glass packs , no cat. converters and out 2" tail pipes. If i had a single exhaust only i would want 2.5" or 3" tail pipe. Bigger engine i might do different. Only two county's in Idaho have smog testing , my county, canyon , has only had it 2 or 3 years , Ada county has had it much longer.
Sounds like this 'ruling' has nothing to do with actual tailpipe emissions.
Couldn't you have tried another inspection place on the other side of town or do they register a fail in the computer so you will be hosed anywhere you go?
Should have made that "y" connection a bolt on so after you pass you can put the other pipe and muffler back like you want it.
