My truck is in the shop tore down to the block. I just found out I need to replace a head. (With 90K miles...) May truck is a 2005 F250 Super Duty. I found a 2004 head. is there anyway I can tell if it is the same as my 2005 head? I think the part number is 6049 for the 05...
I have a place that will rebuild it.
Thanks for looking...
You can probably buy a remanufactured or new head. Even advance auto sells heads for some engines. I would look into a new/reman on before buying a used head and rebuilding it.
As for the 2004 vs 2005, I'm not that familiar with the 6.0s, but you want both heads to be EXACTLY the same. Don't play guessing games in whether the replacement head is the same as your original head that's still on it.

The place that is rebuilding the heads replace the seats and other items. I'll ask tomorrow and find out for sure. I am just using the bare head and using my valve train.
ok so is the head a 4c3z 6049 xxx, 3c3z 6049 xxx, or a 5c3z 6049 xxx.
for what its woth all heads are 6049 doest matter if its a mustang or an f550.
the first set of numbers is what it fits, second set is what it is, 3 set is the revision of the part

And where would I find those numbers? I looked on the net and can't find them. A link to a sight would be a great help.
Thank you very much.
your best bet will be to go by weather its a early or late build 04 head you found.
did it use a log rail are a wave rail. if the rail is not there look at the rocker box and count the oil rail bolt holes logs took 8 wave took 9.
casting numbers maybe on the head casting.

If I take my cracked head with me to look at the used one, I should be able to see if they match, right?
From Ford, the correct part number for a replacement cylinder head is 3C3Z-6049-DA (or whatever the part number changes up to) for all 6.0L engines from 2003 on up to early 2006 (NON-commonized engines).

Where can I find the 3C3Z-6049-DA. Is it a casting mark?
What is a "NON-commonized engines"?
I would be very leery of putting a used or reman head on. I just replaced one about a year ago and I went with OEM. Also make sure to use OEM head gaskets. Going with anything less is just asking for trouble.

I think you are right. I called Bulletproof and Sinister and they both recommend new heads. Both also said if the head is surfaced improperly, it can cause real problems with valve clearance at higher RPM's.
Now, who has the best deal on new heads. So far $1,250 is the best I have found.

All my receipts are at my accountant for taxes, but I want to say I paid $1000+/- for the one I bought, but it was with an employee discount (My mechanic is a Ford tech).
