So I decided to remove the PO's electric fuel pump and put in a mechanical. (really can't stand the noise). I checked my block numbers (D1VE) and head matches (D3VE) to make sure I had the right year. Went to O'reilly and picked up the pump. When I try to install it, it doesn't line up right, almost like the cam is too far down for me to push the pump up to the screw holes by about 1/4 inch. (sorry trying to explain the best I can). Would an oversized cam cause this? or maybe do I need to turn the engine over to move the cam up? Just don't want to break anything.
Electric fuel pump on these trucks are the best-external, should be near the tank. If the mechanical fails, it COULD pump fuel into the crank case=engine failure.
Your electric pump, if its loud, it needs changed. Or relocated.
note!
I know this doesnt apply to these trucks, but any EFI crap will have a fuel pump, in tank that is worth more than the vehicle.
Do your homework, and research, every part.
The newer vehicles are trash, throw away when it breaks.
wow were moving into a whole other thread, very intresting,Thunderjet what external fuel pump have you favored,if we need to start a new thread,,,any pics of location, wiring specifics thanks,,,,,,my 460 at the engine builder so Ill be crossing this path,,,,I was going mechanical sort of no brainer for me because thats all Ive ever known thanks again

Happened to me about a yr ago. Mech. pump failed and dumped all the gas into the engine. Was quite the mess to figure out. Engine didn't fail but right away you could tell it wasn't running correctly. At least the engine is clean now.
The pump cam eccentric does not look centered in the pic. (It should be)
Some of the cams had a spacer that has to be removed if a new gear set is installed.
Bolt loosened holding cam gear and eccentric??
Further checking might be needed.
another problem I've run into. So I got the cam to TDC and the pump is still a little snug but I figured if I put the bolts in it will line up. However, since there wasn't a mechanical pump on this to begin with I don't have the bolts for it. There was just a plate there. Anyone have the bolt lengths/size? I'm about ready to go buy another electric pump and use my old as a spare if I can't get this thing in. I am kind of affraid of the cam just busting off the fuel pump arm.
