burning oil?

Ok I just reciently had my truck services with the usual oil change, and apearantly I am burning oil, its not a lot, but its enough to make me concerned and want to fix the issue, granted its 16 years old but shouldn't be burning oil I don't think, now when I took it in it was down a quart of oil (5 left) so what I would like to know is what could be causeing the "burning of oil" and how I might be able to remedy the issue.

Thanks!

Use will cause you to burn oil. I've tried a couple band aid things. Heavier weight oil, I'm running 10w40 in winter and 15w40 in summer. That cut it down a little. I also ran a can of "Restore" engine treatment through it once. It made it smoke like hell til I changed the oil again, but it doesn't burn nearly as much now. So I'm not sure what it did exactly beside **** my motor off, but it helped.

My old 5.0 was burning it pretty heavily. I suspected the valve guides were worn so one weekend I removed them and took them to a machine shop and they did a valve job, got the heads back the same day. Put it all back together and it completely solved the issue. $300, two days and a lot of beer I was back on the road.

ill give that all a try, as for the shop work it may be a bit of time before I can get to the work so im just trying to resolve it as best as I can or at least minimize the burning, I know its going to happen as its an older truck but I just want to try and lessen how much is burned off and how fast its happening...as best as I can..

also for the garage work I haven't torn an engine down before, and don't really have the place or space to do so (or another car to use while doing so) so I have to leave it to a shop if im going to have that done, I do know what your refering to I believe but would rather leave it to the pros to do...just safer that way IMO

again thanks for all the help

My current 5.8 doesn't require any topping off throughout the oil change, never loses a drop. It has 233k on it and when I change it it still looks almost new. I think I got lucky there, it has to have been rebuilt.

My 351w has 93k on it. Every 3k I lose about a quart now. I was losing 3-4qts between changes before I ran the Restore through it. I'm fully prepared for whatever got fixed by that to let lo0se at about 4500-5500 RPMs and blow the motor up though. The PO was a farmer...Need I say more?

My 5.8 loses about a quart between changes. But I'm almost positive its a leaking rear main seal.

Lucas oil stabilizer. If I hadnt used it myself I wouldnt believe it works. Went form burning a qt a week on a E250 5.4L to about a qt a month.

ok thats what I was thinking of, Lucas, ill give some of those things a try and see what happens, if it safe to put Lucas in at every oil change or when ever I top off oil or will that cause issues with the engine? im fine with doing it only at each oil change if thats the case, but if I can put it in every so many weeks or what ever (or when I top off oil as needed) im cool on that also...

I actually used to add the whole bottle during oil changes. On a work truck for a company I had Id just add it to a gallon jug after I used up the first quart.
