Hi I am usually on the Excursion threads, but looking to get a first generation explorer to turn into a trail/off road rig for my son & I to use & enjoy. Or are the 95-01 ok to use? I want a 4dr so if my wife & daughter want to go to there would be enough room & fun for all of us. I am kind of on a budget right now. So any opinions or suggestions would be great.
Avoid the 4.0 SOHC in the '95-'01s. Some go over 200k, but they are a time bomb. If an engine change does not bother you, go ahead.
The 5 speed automatics are weak as well. Watch for flaring between shifts.
A first gen with the OHV motor and a 5 speed manual would be a real find. You would probably have to go into the trans for seals and shifter items, but that isn't terrible.
Hard core?
Hate to send you to another site, but it's all they do and they have all kinds of picture-rich fixit threads:
