Fresh meat on the road

I suffered a flat tire the other day on my way into work. Called AAA and my supervisor to report that I would be late in to work. Before anyone asks, no I do not have a spare. The factory was too small, and a correct size does not fit under the bed. I have plans to put a fuel tank where the spare goes. I am getting a spare for off road though.

So the flat bed shows up to tote me 1.2 miles to a tire shop, which I didn't much care for but my shop, Americas Tire, is closed on Sundays. Well, when he loads my truck he does a horrible job and mangled the tire more. What was a simple patch and fill was now a 4" gash in the side wall.

Long story short, $600 later I have 2 new tires, the next 2 next week.

The pictures are POST mangle. The tire was still on the rim when I pulled over.

I can't keep the spare in the bed all the time. I work in LA... I have a lowered expectation of people. But I'd like to get one of those swinging tailgates that hold a spare.
As for the tank, it's a 40 gallon from a 350 cab/chassis. It will go where the X member for the spare is. I just need some funds to take it to a shop so they can cut the rivots and put in a new straight cross member in front of the tank.

Oh and in regards to the wheel, I inspected it and the lip that holds the seal doesn't appear to have any damage. When ever I saw it, it was resting on the tire.

steel braided cable with reinforced loop ends routed through the tiedown points in the bed, series 5200 lock holding it all together. not perfect but if they really want it...

of course i also work in a secure community environment so less detritus running around my workplace.

you been digging around in my head on that aux tank thing? i was think Ex 44 gal tank and had the same cross member concerns. have a donor tank already? plans to throw a second fuel door on the bedside? guess im ruining any surprise tech articls

I have the tank. I'd like to T into the fill neck so I can fill both at once. Those plans aren't worked out yet.

How do you plan on handling the fuel draw off from the tanks?

I got a call from my insurance today. They cut me a check for the full amount of BOTH tires less my $100 deductible.

I just asked nicely I guess. They said because of the unusual circumstances, they would cover both the damaged tire and the one that had to be replaced on the other side, even though it didnt get damaged, it still had to be replaced.

I know seriously! when i got hit in my work parking lot I had 05 headlights and I had to fight them to get the 05 replacement headlight not the original 04 ones...I lost and had to pay extra for it. Although they screwed up and paid me extra because they thought my bumper was painted so I ended up winning in the end lol.

My insurance company is great. Good customer service and significantly cheaper than everyone else. Esurance for the win.
