I am currently looking to purchase my first diesel . I have found one I'm thinking about buying its a 2004 ford f 250 with 93000 miles asking 19990 from a large dealer in my area. I have herd alota of bad stories about the 6.0 but I'm not sold on everyone of them being junk. Ran a car fax on it and it came back showing the truck was serviced ever 5 to 7 thousand miles at a large ford dealer up to 90000 miles. I'm just curious if anyone that owns a 6.0 has any insite on the problem areas like injectors EGR and oil cooler. And ways these can be fixed or of they need to be fixed. As far as I can tell the truck is completelystock aside from an edge programmer. Any help would be appreciated thanks guys!
Blades is right the scan gauge will be your life saver, make sure all recalls have been taken care of and any reflash to the pcm 04 had some Issues, but my 04 has been a really great truck minus the recall and reflash running good now , keep OEM oil and fuel filters and OEM oil cap no aftermarket, I just changed my oil to a synthitic rottella 5 40 and my Injectors are loveing that and batteries and FICM has to be tip top.check to see how old batts are and what the ficm vlts are putting out .
19,900 is WAY too much, imho. That is a 19,000 truck if it's a Crew Cab Lariat or higher trim and in immaculate condition with full service records. Look it up on KBB or NADA for a better idea of what a fair price is. Then take it to an independent mechanic familiar with Powerstrokes and have him run a fine toothed comb over it. You could easily have to spend $5K on a truck that looks and runs fine to the untrained 6.0 buyer.
Having said that, a 6.0 is not a bad engine. It just has some weak components. First change the fuel spring and add ARP head studs (stock head bolts will stretch). Next delete the EGR cooler and install a Bulletproof oil cooler when they need it (trust me, they will both eventually need it) and you will have one badass Powerstroke.
