I would just drop the headliner and follow the wires and find an easy spot to tie into it. What do you intend on using the second light for? I could maybe think of a more detailed
answer with a little more info
Thanks for the suggestion. There is two things I would like to do, Disconnect the third brake light as it is hidden behind the service box and move the cargo light into the sevice box.
I would unscrew the cargo/3rd brake, cut the wires at the back of the cargo light assembly, and solder and heat shrink Xft of wire to either drill through the box or run to a pre existing opening in the box. By cutting the wires behind the cargo light assembly you would still have the connector so you could disconnect the bed in the future for removing the box or anything like that. Then keeping the connector behind the light assembly screw it back in place with the wires hanging out of the bottom. The rubber seal should concave to form around the wires and keep moisture out. Maybe even put a dot of silicon over the spot where the wires come through for extra protection. Lastly I would run the exposed wire between the cab and box through some loom tube for a dressy, and protected look. Then you can hook up what ever light you have for mounting in the box.
If you have to drill a hole for it I would drill the hole, and pop a rubber grommet in it. Match the inner diameter of the grommet with the diameter of the loom tube for a snug fit
Yes I decide to go this way. I spliced into the harnes at the light and then drilled a hole throuh the light. Installed water tight gromets also. I drilled the light because it is replaceable if the truck ever gets modified later.
