when I got into my '72 today, noticed that the shifter wobbled up and down...enough to move the indicator from N to 2 while in staying in D. Tranny is Automatic C6 with 390FE. This loose position was all over the place. As I drove up to my house, I couldn't properly place it into R and eventually got stuck in D gear while the entire shifter column is moving freely without engaging any gears. I am stuck in D gear. Before I rip this thing open...any advice?
If the shift lever cannot be used to engage any gear, Park or Neutral, and just flops around, the shift collar it attaches to has broken internally...which is common.
The collar has a "bridge" made as part of it. Inside the column, this bridge connects the outer portion of the collar to the shift tube. The collar is die cast (pot metal), its bridge develops cracks, eventually breaks apart.
D5TZ7228A (replaced C9TZ7228A & C5TZ7228A) .. A/T Shift Collar Kit / Available from Ford.
Fits: 1965/66 F100/250 / 1967/77 F100/350.
MSRP: $65.98 // FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM price: $47.51.
This shift collar kit is 'as original' for 1975/77's, and the Ford service part replacement for the collars used 1965/74. It has a slot in it for the (included) indicator used for the shift dial to slip into.
The original 1965/74 collars had the pointer made as part of it. I've searched for the original collars, no Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.
I haven't pulled the collar out yet...had to walk to work. But I did reach out under the dash and see if the neutral switch lever (#7B097) is responding to the gear shifter. It seemed to respond somewhat sloppy, but then I noticed something that did not make sense. I repositioned the gear shifter as far left as possible (P position) and checked the neutral switch and it was also located all the way to the left. Meanwhile the truck is still in gear (neutral or drive) and not in park where it should be. I haven' had the chance to check the linkage yet and not sure what it looks like. Not sure if this diagram is applicable to my set...https://www.ford-trucks.com/user_gal...136543&width=0
Is it common for the adjustment bolt on shift rod and transmission lever to loosen up and allow the shift rod to move without engaging the transmission lever? Gonna have to walk back home from work and crawl under the truck.
Also, I do not have the neutral switch assembly (#7A247) only the lever. Is it safe to hold down the brake and start the engine in gear?

What happens if for some reason someone else starts it not knowing and runs over and kills someone? How good is the E-Brake? Will it keep the rig from moving if applied?
Number dummy...Shift collar broke pretty badly. Linkage was fine.
Arctic y block...no worries, nobody drives my truck. I also engage the brake pedal while starting. But I am wondering if the truck is in gear and E-brake is on and engine is started...that would probable really mess the flywheel or starter.

Nah! It won't hurt that stuff. It will be fine. Just the safety thing is all. I have done it too so I understand. But sh-t happens.
Since there were so many interior colors, and the fact that the collar fits sooo many years, if they came painted, it would have been necessary to have a separate part number for every one of them.
And if you bought D5TZ7228A (the pointer comes separate from the collar), LMC bought it from a local FoMoCo dealer.
What did they charge you for the part? You coulda bought it from a FTE dealer sponsor for $47.51.
This same collar is listed in Carpenter's catalog for $70.00.
