There may be a reason for a housing on a big rig (tradition? shiny-ness?), but I haven't found it yet for a 7.3. I have found no reason (other than noise) to be anything other than happy with my 6637. It seems to stay spotlessly clean and I just wash the RiffRaff cover on occasion. Blinding rainstorms leave it dry, too.

I'm not a real big-time big rig expert, but since the filters are outside the hood I'm guessing that the reason for the housings to shield them from the weather. Since ours are under the hood it seems that would at least lessen the requirement for that.

I have a 6637 with an Outerwears cover (water phobic) it does a really good job of keeping the filter dry from stray water that ends up in the engine bay via car wash or the occasional puddle. When I had the cover off to wash it once I tried testing how water resistant it actually was, and it was completely resistant to drips and took a pretty stead flow of water to actually work its way through the filter. This being said, I am currently making a custom box for when I go play with my truck to be a real guard against splashing. Like trekbasso does, I also put my AIS on for longer trips just because of noise.

It must be fishing day on the forums. Evey forum seemed to have a vague question on something that has been debated over and over again. Search button has a lot of basic info.
