Has anyone ever tried running an OuterWear prefilter cover on the filter of the Tymar Intake? I'm interseted in trying it to see if it will cut down on some of the dust that gets collected and prevent water damage also.
I'm not familiar with outerwear, but I think the extra protection would be worth the added restriction in a high dust envrironment. I dont see how it would help in water unless it was treated.
We used to run outerwear pre filters for dirt track racing. I dont know if they make an outerwear large enough for your filter. As for restriction we flow tested a few of them and found very minimal restriction when clean but after a dirt track race we found them to be more restrictive than just running an air filter even after a race. If you are into cleaning it all the time I would not put it on there. We would clean ours after every race and even on the asphalt tracks with minimal dirt they would start to restrict pretty quickly.
It's not worth it. The Donaldson filter element repels water (patented designe used only by Donaldson and Baldwin) and already filters between 99.8-99.9%. The pre-filters are more useful for the reusable elements that don't have the same level of filtration.
thanks for the replies. You can get them custom made to fit , but glad to hear about the restrictions. Guess I won't get one then as I want all the air flow that I can get.
Thanks again.
How about stretching an outerwear arond the snorkel of the intake horn on stock or AIS intakes with the Zoodad mod? Keep bugs and crap from being sucked into the canister area and with minimal restriction?
This is the link of where you can get them custom ordered for about any size filter. http://www.outerwearsracing.com/custom_order.php.
I was just thinking that something like that would be a good idea as I live out here in the desert on a dirt road and the dust is terrible. I guess though for no more than the filters cost it wouldn't be worth doing if they will restrict the air flow with minimal dust on them. I use them on both of our quads, but then again they are easy to blow off too.
