I want to remove the motor from the truck and clean all the old built up oil and replace all the gaskets...is there a kit that has all the needed gaskets for this situation.where could i find it
Thanks
What motor are you rebuilding? I just ordered a set of Fel-Pros for my 4.9 and it comes as a Head set (upper gaskets) and Conversion set (lower gaskets).
Any auto parts store should have a complete engine gasket kit but make sure you get a decent kit. It has been a while since I have bought a gasket kit myself but even 20 years ago Fel-pro were the gaskets to get. I will be rebuilding my engine soon myself so i will be in the same boat.
Its a 4.9L l6 300 fuel injected.and iff you guys say that that is a good brand for gaskets then that's what i will find
The set of Fel-Pros I ordered for that motor ('96) from Summit ran me $150.00. As I mentioned earlier it comes in 2 sets (Head and Conversion). The part numbers are: HS 8186 PT-7 and CS 8186-3. Hope this helps. And if there good enough for Nascar/NHRA there good enough for Me!!
BTW. I searched online using those part numbers after talking to customer service at Summit and found several suppliers all very close or slightly cheaper to that price, but I called them back cause they were the most informed and professional, and they'll ship straight to your house.
Not yet. Still waitin on the head to come back from the machine shop. Its gettin vacuum checked and valve stem seals while I got it out. You might wanna do the same thing with yours unless your not rippin through oil and got good compression. But for a couple hundred bucks its worth it to not have to do it again after its all back together. Gettin the motor apart wasnt too bad. The biggest thing Id worry about are the many vacuum lines. Go easy on em as they may be dried out and brittle and make sure you know where there goin for reassembly. Not sure what shape your emission components are in but that might give you some trouble. The EGR tube and Air Injection Rail are notorious for rusting and binding up/breakin off and snappin bolts! Past that, pay attention to what your doin, dont rush, keep your parts and fasteners organized and clean and you wont have a problem.
As far as my build goes, Im installing an older head that doesnt have the A.I.R. ports in it and blocking off the EGR on the intake because they were both rusted and broken and I think I can get it goin ok without them. Im not sayin you should too, but it might be a factor for you, as you have the same motor. Ill keep you posted after I get it back together (by next weekend hopefully) and let you know what it looks like after its all repainted!
