How much does the camper weigh?...........That will tell you.
This.
If you don't already have a rear sway bar, you might consider one. I'm sure you can get everything you need at a salvage yard since some trucks have them factory.
If the weight of the camper and the truck exceed the weight rating of your tires, especially the rears, you need a couple more wheels. Be sure to include weight of all gear you may stow in the camper, water, batteries, clothes, food, people. Load it up and go weigh it. It is not hard to overload a 3/4 ton truck with a big camper.
My setup weighed abit over 10,000lbs on load range C tires.
Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. That's no better than my dad towing a 8k# trailer on a drop ball mount and hitch only rated for 5k# with a Tahoe....
On older trucks like yours, dual axles aren't really about adding GVWR but about adding stability. That's not as true on newer trucks, where the GAWR for a DRW axle can be anywhere from 1500 to 3000 lbs more than for a SRW.
It'll help, but you'll probably get better results moving from a 3/4 ton truck to a 1-ton truck, or getting a newer truck, if that's an option.
Gotta do with what'cha got sometimes. Ofcourse a dually be much better with a big camper as it would be ALOT more stable as mine was on single wheels.
And off subject, but I just noticed in your sig, says your 86 is dead and parted out????? The hell happened to it?
Engine gave out and the two i had were also junk... decided it was time to quit dumping money in it.
The previous owner towed a horse trailer with the pump maxed out and no pyro, and liked to blow smoke, so it was on borrowed time when i got it. Finally got to the point that even with ether it wouldn't start unless plugged in overnight...
Id go with a dually if you plan to leave the camper in. If youre only going to use it for the annual hunting trip and use the truck for other stuff i would stay SRW. If staying SRW use some good quality tires and maybe some air bags. If considering DRW dont forget the option of converting it. Dually stuff can usually be found pretty cheap, the only problem is finding it. Not that much work to swap it over either, fenders might be pricey though.
