speedo cable noise and speedometer bouncing around
Just buttoned everything back up on my cluster. All lights work and repaired. Pushed in the speedometer cable into back of cluster. But now, the damn speedometer bounces around and the thing makes a buzzing noise almost like the cable isn't seated properly. I pulled the thing out and pushed it back in all the way that I could and still doesn't fix it. Do you have to use a little force to push the speedometer cable back in all the way? I'm sorta afraid to do that do my 30 yr. old cluster...?

never mind - it wasn't seated all the way. I'm used to seeing that when the cable fitting is seated properly against the cluster, you can't pull it out. my clip is worn, so that particular yes/no test was not valid. all is well now.

Inside the speedometer cable housing is a woven steel core that is supposed to be lubed every so often. Most people are unaware, so when the lube dries out, woven steel core binds up inside the housing and snaps.
Autoparts stores sell a universal woven steel core kit. Cut it to length, coat with a fine film of graphite and install in the housing.
