Blown engine. Now what?

Need advice.

My Explorer needs new motor. Should I keep it or scrap it?

If I scrap it, can I get any $$ out of it? Its in great shape (aside from the motor). Has about 100K on it.

I have a tough time just handing it to a scrap yard for 300$ so they can make money off my misfortune.

Anyone replaced a 4.0 SOHC? How much did it cost?

Dealers first comments included the phrase "around $6,000" which is probably a no go. Under 4.5K I might start considering it.

I'd probably only be interested in a reman from Ford or elsewhere. Not interested in a junkyard motor, I just dont have time to do the legwork and there is too much risk.

Appreciate any opinions or insight.

Can you donate it for charity and have any meaningful charitable tax deduction? (one of my plans for the day SOHC hell visits my door)

Google "rebuilt ford 4.0 sohc" and find:

https://www.sandjengines.com/rebuilt...-244OHCLB/9202

FORD 4.0 V6 Engine SOHC 02-05 VIN E

And a host of others.

Another site that deals w/Exploders/Rangers only:

Cheapo 4.0 SOHC engine rebuild! Long story... - Ford Explorer Ranger Enthusiasts "Serious Explorations"®

Can you R&R it? Or do you need it done start to finish? $2500 and some pain and suffering sounds better than $6k.

Good luck.

Price a Jasper or Grooms at an independant shop . Jasper suppliers are usually less expensive than Ford . Just a Thought ! I would go with used myself . But , It is my labor , not a shops rate !

Used is ok, but you have to replace the tensioners and otherwise make sure you haven't installed a grenade with the pin already pulled. OP states little desire to deal with the joys of a scrappy special.....

With the inherent issues relating to this engine design, I would not chance a P&P engine...

The OP has not informed as to why/how the engine needs replacement... Philip

Believed to be chain/tensioner related based on statistics mostly
i guess. Has not been opened up though.

Motor will not turn at all. Trans seems ok, goes in N, can roll the vehicle.

Violent shake on cold start up, then nothing. No prior indication of problems, no noises.
