Best I can describe is that when you turn the wheel, a signal is sent to an electric motor that assists the driver with turning the wheels. There are no hydraulics involved. It looks to me like a rack and pinion set up with a motor in the middle.
You can't mount a snow plow to an EPAS equipped truck and likewise there is no power robbing PS pump.
I haven't heard or read of any issues with these units.

The snowplow beef seems to be EcoBoost intercooler blockage--fixed by one mfger, see previous links. And electical load, also "fixed" by one outfits design.
