Question No top end

Have a 89 e-350, 460 multi-port engine. Its in a motorhome. Have no power when trying to pass. Engine cuts out and studders. Cleaned honeycomb out of catalatic converter. Installed new banks muffler, change both fuel pumps, filter, pressure regulator. new plugs, wire, rotor, cap. Cleaned injectors, all my mechanics are stupped. Any ideas, leaving soon on trip.

Does it do it on a initial hard take-off too? Just when hot? or all the time?
Maybe a vacuum leak?
Does it stumble at all when just reving the engine in park? or only when moving? Dad had a suburban that broke fins off in torque converter that did same thing when passing or pulling.
Just throwing out guesses.
Chuck

If it has a mass airflow sensor, take it off and clean the element with carb cleaner. Sometimes they get covered in crud and don't send good readings back to the computer. You might want to check the MAP sensor and the module in the dist. You can get a book on these engines and test most of the sensors. It wouldn't hurt to get the codes pulled out of the computer, either. Hope this helps. Dave

We have changed the map sensor, idle sensor, oxygen sensor, installed a new electronic advance? inside the distributor. Have taking out every injector, in process of check each one. Did find one of them has no hole in the middle, but it still sprays a good pattern, all original. What controlls the amount of fuel the injector sprays?

Yes hard take offs it studders but it idles great and mid-range too. Just cuts out at top end. We have also changed every vacuum hose we could see. The tranney was just rebuild, bring it home when I notice this problem. Now, this is new, one night after changing parts we took it for a spin, the exhaust manifold and Y pipes where cherry red, all the way back to oxygen sensor. This time it had no muffler, just ended at cat. converter, and it is gutted?

Just got done testing all injectors, they all spray a good pattern. Pushed Carb. cleaner thru them. I'm all out of ideas, every thing is changed. About prevest meassage, all my mechanics are STUMPED not stupped. What controls the current to the injectors, MAP sensor? And if so does it do it at different voltages? My days are getting numbered before trip, need help fast. Thanks

Had a car many years ago that acted similar to what you're describing. Turns out the coil was breaking down internally, wouldn't produce enough spark for a heavy load. It would idle and cruise, like yours, without any problem. It's the only SWAG I could think of.

Thumbs up No top end

We just thought about that the coil, we had a bigger truck that would idle, but no power, changed the coil, ran like new. Have a higher voltage coil coming from Jegs tomorrow, will install and let you guys know. I sure hope this does it, getting expensive changing every thing. Thanks
