Gas Tank Capacity?

Hi,

I'm looking to get a 2008 F250 or 350 with a V10, crew cab, short bed.

I can't seem to find the OEM fuel tank size for this truck. I've seen 29.5, 30.5, 38, and 40 gallons mentioned, but I know those are dependent on wheelbase, chassis cab, etc.

I know that the long beds are 38 gallon, and I think the short beds are 30 gallons.

You're correct, 38gal long bed, the short bed is 29gal.

I have a 2009 long bed. And If i let it run down to only 2 or 3 miles to E and fill it up it only takes a little over 34 gallons...? I assumed it was a 35 gallon tank... I guess thats what I get for assuming. Must be 38 then if 35 is not an option

Just be satisfied with the fact that, no matter what Ford says concerning the capacity of your fuel tank, it isn't big enough.

According to the 2005 vehicle specifications they are as follows for the superduty pickups. To my knowledge they haven't changed.

29.0 Gal. (109 L) With 141.8
WB SuperCab/156.2WB Crew Cab;
38.0 Gal. (143 L) With Regular Cab/158
WB SuperCab/172.4WB Crew
Cab

There are different options available for Chassis Cabs - I think the standard is 40gal behind the axle with an optional additional or replacement midship tank of 28gal.

I love all of the speculation every time this question comes up... Its an easily verifiable fact.

In 2008 Superduty pickups there were 2 tank size options. 30.5 for short beds, and 38 for long beds. Period.

Some people report more or less, that is not the question because every time you pump is slightly different when it clicks off due to how much the fuel foams, which triggers the click off.

For the record, 2008-10 chassis cabs all came standard with 40 gallon tanks, with an optional 19 gallon mid ship tank.

Now that we've sorted out the 2008, I have a 2001 question. I have an F250 short bed, and understand that the stated fuel capacity is 29 gallons. My question is, how much of that is usable? The whole 29 gallons? I'm not big on running the thing as low as I can, but last week I decided to be adventuresome and on a highway trip ran it until the trip computer read close to zero. The gauge was on empty, and I was starting to sweat it just a bit, even knowing that they are usually conservative and you still have a gallon or two left when it hits zero. Filled it up, 25.1 gallons, which is the most I've ever put in. Has anybody actually run one of these things dry and, if so, how much of the 29 is usable? I'm all for being conservative, but 4 gallons seems excessively so. Thanks

Every ford vehicle I own has about 50 miles of range left when the computer says 0 miles to empty. So if you drive til the computer says 0 miles to empty you'll still have about 3 or 4 gallons of gas in the tank. It's a safety factor they build in so folks don't run out of gas.

The tanks for trucks with the gas engines are designed to stop filling early due to the emission control system that needs to have a certain amount of air space in the tank to work correctly, so 25 gallons is about right for the usable amount in a 29 gallon tank.

Trucks with the diesel engine don't need this extra air space but Ford still uses the same tank as the gas engines do so the nozzle will still shut off early. But you can do the Harpoon Mod to your tank which will then let you fill the entire tank and be able to use the full 29-30 gallon capacity!!!

Here is a thread on the Harpoon mod:
