So in the process of restoring my steering system (Ive got enough play to park a bus in) was wondering what peoples recomendations were for a better then stock steering shaft (firewall to gearbox) my current one has a ton of slop in the slip joint which is where most my play is coming from. While Im in there Ive also got a redhead gerbox coming and plan on doing all new pump and hoses as I have an intermitent leak as well (infrequently will have a small puddle of PS fluid under front of truck but no rhyme or reasson to when it leaks)
the problem with that slip joint is the teflon bushing held in with a spring steel clip. the clip breaks and the bushing falls out.
this is a non serviceable item per ford.
if you can find the parts it is about a 1 hour fix with the column out of the truck on the tailgate.
i look for columns in junkyards that have a good lower and bad upper. i can get them for $25 and then gut them for the parts.
i have rebuilt the column in my 88 3 times so far.
