This might be dumb, but I'm a beginner Why exactly do some of you fellow FTE members use the Toyota p/s box? It's so expensive on the midfifty website, but my guess is that it has to do with IFS or something? Maybe a straight front axle?
Like Ross said...they fit like a glove and they give your stock "armstrong" steering a little power boost. As for the cost...when you drive one of these trucks with a power assisted steering setup you will understand why they are worth the money. If you are going to an IFS then the Toyota box is not for you.
The Toyota box is a modern design recirculating ball power steering box that virtually bolts in place of the OEM box like it was designed to go there and is a perfect match for the beam axle. The price of the rebuilt Toy boxes isn't bad when you compare it to the price of a rebuilt stock box that still uses a design originally used in the 30's. But the Toy box is so well built that using a salvaged box (typically available for 25.-125.00) is a safe bet. Rebuilding the front beam and installing the Toyota box is about 25 - 33% the cost of the MII and doesn't require any special skills or major equipment to install.
