I have an 04 F250, stock. Two times within the last week I have noticed whiteish smoke comming out of the tail pipe and a diesel smell. Could this be the glow plugs going out and not burning the fuel, I have not changed them since owning the truck or something else. need some help on this one. thanks
Yes, White/ bluish smoke at startup is almost always unburnt fuel. Try going thru the glow plug cycle twice before cranking. What was the ambient temp when this happened? under 40 degrees these diesels will have a hard time starting without some smoke.
"Fishing76" the day when this has happened it has been above 50 degrees, yes when it is cold outside at first start up it smokes for just a second, I figured that was normal. So would you suggest going through the glow plug light twice before starting each time?
"Greentree Ford" I do not have any gauges, only the stock ones.
"Yahiko" 6.0L, so if I have a bad glow plug I will get a message through my check engine light?
This morning I could smell diesel again but didnt see any smoke.
I have no lights on my dash and all of my gauges are good. Anyone have any success with the diesel kleen?

It can't hurt anything. the hotter the combustion chamber is, the less it will smoke on startup.
Another thing, you didn't buy Diesel #1, instead of Diesel #2 did you? Diesel#1 will produce more smoke, at least it did in my 7.3. It's a rare occurance, I know, but happens. Also, I believe fuel quality plays a part here too. I always get my fuel from the most used (usually the dirtiest looking pump at the gas station/truck stop) That way at least I am always getting fresh fuel.
Had a similar issue with my 07, swore it was a glow plug(s) going out. Brought it into the local Ford dealer and the diesel wrench (top notch mechanic) told me that glow plug failure is almost unheard of. He was right, the problem was some sort of relay (to the tune of ~$600 ) and she started perfectly after that. No cel was thrown, which sounds exactly like what yours is doing, & also tried recycling the preheat, but that didn't do anything either. Just another nail in the coffin to end my string of 20+ years of diesel ownership..........

Sounds about right, I would need to get on my office machine and look it up to be 100%. If those 6.0's don't start on the second to third engine revolution, your in trouble! It's been my experience that if you have to crank it more than a few cycles you pretty well end up with dead batteries. My 7.3's I could crank twice as much and still have plenty of juice left over even if the lights happened to be on.
