My memory is failing me so I thought I would ask.
Up until 1986 the 351W was available in the F250. In 78-79 a 351M (Midland engine) was available. TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT ENGINES.
Somewhere in the early 90s a 5.8 was again available in the Ford trucks.
My question what was this engine??? For some reason I didn't think it was a W or an M.
Would some one enlighten me on this.
Thanks,
Craig
The 351W was renamed the 5.8 sometime in the late 80's. And as far as I know it was never dropped from the F series until the last ones rolled out in the 97 model year. The 94-97's got a roller block and cam. The 351M (Modified 400 not Midland) was available from 1977 until about 1982. Afterwards the 351W was the only option other than the 300 six the 302 and the 460. The 351M was a destroked 400, thus the term "Modified" Ford touted it as something of a reborn 351C, which it was far from that, aside from being in the same engine family.

Thanks For the info. The 351M & 400 if memory serves me were built in the Midland plant. The 400 would come alive with a mild cam & 4bbl. They were a way different engine with those 2 mods. But granted not a 351C.
It has been awhile since I saw a 90s 5.8 & for some reason I didn't think they were 351W.

For what its worth, my 96 Bronco had a 5.8L (351w) in it. I think they used it is the big engine option in the 1/2 tons didnt they?

Right up until 1997. I've had both an E150 van and and F150 with a 351W. There was a 96 F150 with another, right next to the 97 F250 I pulled the roller 351W out of sitting on my engine stand.
There was a bit of overlap between the end of the 351m and the beginning of the 351w era in Ford trucks. The windsor started appearing in the late '70s... my father had a '78 E150 with a 351w in it and it was a complete dog but it was the smog era so everything was, while the 351m still appeared in some trucks up until the end of '81 or '82. The 5.8 is just a 351w motor with an EFI intake on it and a metric designation for displacement.
You're right about the vans having them, but I can't recall ever seeing the windsor in a pickup until the 80's. My son's 81 Bronco had a 351W in it. I've even run across a late 70's van that had a 360 in it. That was weird..
