I have a 1994 Ford F-150 with a 300 6cyl in it and i was wondering why the parking brake isnt working. I have had the drums off and checked everything out and all looks to be in good shape. What would be the problem why the parking brake isnt working? I have rattled my brains out over this and still nothing. If i can get it figured out, i might have to take it to a repair shop. Any help will be greatly appreciated with this. Thanks.
If you have inspected the cables, internal components behind the drums and everything is adjusted and correctly assembled, it is very possible that the control (foot lever ) is failed. Also you have a broken cable ( internal to the cable housing in the front which connects to the control in the cab ).
Most likely the cables that go back to the rear parking brake are seized solid in their housings. If you had some that haven't been replaced somewhat recently or are used regularly and aren't seized it would be unusual. The only real fix is to replace the cable housing assemblies. Not terribly expensive the last time I replaced some.
You didn't say how your parking brake pedal acts. Does it push easily to the floor?
When i had the drums off, i checked the cables to see if they were seized in the casing but they are free. No broken cables on either side. The parking brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. When you release it, it releases but you have to take your foot to bring it up all the way so that they parking brake light will go off. IM stumped on this one guys. Thanks.
It goes down easy with no problem. I had my g/f push it down and let me look at the cables while the pedal is being pushed down and the cables are moving.
From what you stated it sounds like it could be the the control ( lever ). I've seen the mechanism fail on more than one occasion. Observe the control as you depress it and see if it does not pull the cable as it rotates.removing the kick panel and lowering it the floor may make it easier to see.
if the cables move in the rear wheels when the pedal is depressed, there is only a few things it could be.
#1: rear brakes out of adjustment
#2 front parking brake cable stretched/out of adjustment
#3 wrong rear cables (too long)
as for the pedal not returning to full off position (light staying on) it sounds like the spring is broken/stretched/missing
there was a recal on the parking brake lever, something with the parts not lining up right making it go down but not actually engaging all the way, but if the cable moves i dont know if this would be true or not in your case
Guys, you have given me alot of valuable info that i will check into this weekend. I really do appreceiate all the info i can get on this. Is there anyplace i can go to on the internet to check into about the recall of the parking brake? If so, let me know. Thanks to all.
