Lining up mechanical fuel pump

After finally replacing all my return lines and caps (again) I realized my mechanic fuel pump is leaking (can't see where exactly, but looks like its where the two parts are cast together).

Anyway, I got to reading the manual and then some posts here and am seeing the dire warnings about if the thing isn't lined up correctly when you put it back on that you are looking at catastrophic damage.

I've read through a bunch of posts and even watched a video but I'm still not really understanding exactly what the proper and improper alignment would look like (pump in still on it for now).

Does anyone have a good pic of the cam lobe in the correct position vs the incorrect position?

Also, this is on an e350 minibus chasis and it doesn't look like I have a prayer of getting to it without taking the alternator off. The factory manual says to "nudge" the engine to get the lobe lined up but correct me if I'm wrong, that doesn't sound like a smart thing to do w/ the alternator off. It also says to turn the it over by hand but again I'm thinking this engine is a hoss and I don't stand much chance cranking it over by hand tbh.

Any help is much appreciated.

I don't have any pics, but it is not that hard to do. I believe you can actually feel the cam lobe in question. Just look at your pump and it's relation to the cam lobe and tilt it the right way to get it on the right side of the cam. By pressing on the lever of the pump, you will know which side of the cam it is supposed to be on. Turning the motor over by hand is not difficult either. Use a breaker bar with a 15/16ths socket on the crank pulley and you should be able to do it with relative ease. If you cant, you've got girly arms (LOL) so take the glow plugs out, and if you still cant, you've got no arms at all!

Good luck,

Mac.
