Bigger may be better but to big will just cause everything to break. The 428 will have plenty of power i just wanted to know if anyone has done the swap and has any first hand experience advice. Really if anyone has any tips on a engine swap or rebuilt it will be greatly appreciated. we dont really have a shop to do this in so we are doing it under our front porch using an old chain horse and hoisting it up. So advice is well appreciated.
Buddy of mine had a bumpside thatbwas completely rotted out with a strong running 428. He swapped it into a 79' shortbed with absolutely no issues... keep in mind he had the entire bumpside as a donor truck. If I recall he told me the entire swap cost him $20 in beer and band aids.
I have a '76 F-100 short wheel base 4x4. I currently have a 360 and a np435 4-speed. I bought a 428 block not to long ago. I am going to be swapping it in as soon as I get it built. I would also like to see or get information from anyone who has done it. But I imagine it is going to be extremely simple and only a matter of mounting brackets and hooking the plumbing and wiring back up. The only differences or issues that I have read or heard about is that the flywheel or flexplate has to be from a 428 because 428's and 410's are externally balanced engines while all others are internally balanced. This means that there is a weight on the flywheel or flexplate. Make sure you get this or get the crank balanced by a machine shop otherwise it might tear the engine all to shreds. From what I understand though, the harmonic balancers on all FE's are identical. Anyone set me straight if I am incorrect, though.
