I have a 2001 F250 with a PSD. I recently have began having a problem the motor is stalling out while slowing to turn or stop such as at an intersection. I am not on the pedal at all when this happens, yesterday I was going down the interstate and felt the engine hiccoup twice and upon pulling into my driveway it died. I put it in nuetral and it restarted without a problem any ideas. Thanks in advance 4 Paws
If you have a way to pull the codes and get either a PO340 or a PO344 your problem is the Cam Position Sensor. These are notorious for going bad in the PSD. With some people (like me) the truck died and would not restart. Others it would die then restart then die again and again. This sounds like your situation. Ford will replace it for about $250, or for free if still under warranty. Otherwise you can buy one and replace it your self for about $100. I can e-mail you a diagram as to its location if you need it. Easy repair with I believe a 10mm wrench. Good luck.
I just replaced my fuel pump two days ago and it is now doing exactly what you described. When we towed my truck into the shop today I was able to start it and as long as I had my foot on the accelerator it was fine. As soon as we stopped at a light and I had to hold the clutch and brake down the engine would die. I also noticed when I forgot my truck was in gear and I attempted to hit the brake and gas a bit (the engine died of course since I was in gear) the fuel pump kept going as I heard a shrill squeel from the bak where the fuel pump is. It sounds to me like your truck is experiencing many of the same things I went through with mine, though mine is not a diesel. My guess is the fuel pump relay is bad, maybe it's the same for your vehicle?
P.S. when I was holding my clutch and brake down it was under my turck's own power. My dad followed in case we needed to tow it, which we found out at that light we did.
rvfiver- I'd be interested in an e-mail describing the location and any info regarding replacing the cps. My 96' 7.3 does the same thing. My e-mail is bubbagord(No Email Addresses In Posts!) Thanks.
skandiaman, it's called the CMP sensor by Ford and CAMP sensor by International, not CPS. You'll see the sensor on the left side of the front of the engine right behind the belt. There's a plug that needs to be removed and a single 10mm bolt. Simply unplug the sensor, remove the bolt, and replace with the new part. Make sure to use oil or vaseline on the new seal before you install it. There are 2 different sensors that are used so make sure you get the right one. International is usually about half the price of the Ford part.
