Question Spare Tire Lock?

The spare tire & wheel was stolen from my 2001 F-150 recently. I take delivery of a new 2003 FX4 F-150 tomorrow. Does anyone have any recommendations for locking up the spare on my new truck so that it doesn't get stolen? Any purpose made products out there that anyone has tried?

I see something called the WinchLock, but not much else.

Suggestions?

If I ever find out who took my spare - Berretta .40 S&W . But mostly, I want to stop it from happening again. Thanks.

Spare Tire Lock?

I would recommend buying a ford wheel lock for the spare tire... It's a nut with a special imprint, and I think it costs $10.

Spare Tire Lock?

I may be wrong but I think some companies make a spare tire hub that fits over the spare and it has a lock and key to get to it..Like a tool box they give you 2 keys.....
I don't know any brands but I think they do make them..

if i find a website i will let you know

Hard to believe someone would stoop so low to steal a spare tire....O well live and learn.....

Spare Tire Lock?

A cable lock for a bicycle works well too.

Spare Tire Lock?

You can go for a cryptonite bike lock ($40) from your local bikeshop or you can go for the winchlock. I have that on my spare and no one wants to steal my spare anymore. Good luck on protecting your new spare.

Spare Tire Lock?

Maybe I'm wrong, but don't the spare tires already come with a lock on them? I remember having to cut the cable on my lock because we had lost the key. Just wondering.

Spare Tire Lock?

You know, I just goy a 2003 FX4, and I thought it came with a spare tire lock on it. But I still put a bike lock/cable on it and around the frame for safety's sake.

I also WD40'd the lock, and put duct tape around it to keep dirt out of the key hole.

Spare Tire Lock?

Got the new truck home a few weeks ago. I decided to get the cable (bicycle) lock and put it through the wheel and around the frame. -Thanks for the idea-

Went to lower the spare to install the cable lock, and low and behold, there IS a lock in there already, similar to OEM locking lug nuts - the same kind of idea.

So, burned once already by the stolen spare tire, I decide to use my cable anyway. But, I can't lower the spare, because the key piece is NOT IN MY GLOVEBOX.

Off to the dealer I go, where they proceed to replace my spare tire lock - all so I can put my cable lock on there as well.

I'm glad my wife or I (especially the wife) did not get a flat in the first few days of ownership. My suggestion to you all is check and see if you have the factory lock, and if so, do you have the key? Not to sound like my mother, but better safe than sorry.

I've got a 2001 F-250 Crew Cab that I bought a couple of years ago and can't find the key for my spare tire lock. Is this something that I can get at my local Ford dealer?

You can get a new key/lock set from the dealer. If you happen to have the card that came with the original key/lock set, you can order just the key either from the dealer or directly from McGard.
If you are lucky, your dealer may have a set of keys that can be used to match up your lock to a key. If you can't get just the key, then you are in for some fun.
My truck was not delivered to me with a key. When i discovered this several years later, the dealer was good enough to order a replacement key/lock set at no charge. What I then had to to to install it was to:
  1. Remove receiver hitch assembly along with wiring harness if so equipped.
  2. Remove rear bumper, be sure to twist and remove the license plat lights.
  3. Wiggle the guide tube out and set asside.
  4. Get a long narrow straight blade screwdriver and go in from the driver side of the vehicle to pry/wedge out the old lock. (The real fun part! tight spaces.) Once the old lock is out, use the jack handle to lower the spare tire some for extra room.
  5. Install the new lock.
  6. Re-install the guide tube, the rear bumper, and the receiver hitch.
BTW, this procedure is best done with the truck up on a suitable lift. I would hate to have to do this with the truck on the gound! Good luck!

Great! Sounds like a blast!

I'll have to see if my small town dealer can get me something.

Factory spare tire assembily lock

Ya, I called to buy the factory lock assembily kit that fits in the key hole of your bumper and the parts guy asked if I was sitting down before telling me the price. My friend has one on his truck and it isn't much more than a gun lock that goes on the trigger hole on a revolver. He told me they sell for 95 dollars. Ha, no wonder people don't replace them. I came on hoping I'd find one for around 30 or less. If you've got big money go for it, I'll pass and keep on looking.
