Alright, I have read around and need to trouble-shooting advice. I have a loud "tea kettle whistle" (as it's been put online) that I get after I get going from the engine department. It will not be there if I just let the truck gradually get up to speed, but if I accelerate, the whistle starts. It seems as the truck shifts into other gears, the whistle is at the low end of the gear and as I build up speed it tends to die off. I'd be lying if I said I kept all of the coolant that I'm suppose to have. There has been a little bit of wetness on the top of the reservoir.
I have heard that this could be an exhaust pipe, a head gasket, or the dreaded EGR valve. I only get this sound if I'm driving, so I'm wondering if anyone knows how I can trouble-shoot this or at least diagnose what this might be (and what kind of price tag I am looking at)?
I am getting ready to look for the same thing. You need to get a rubber pipe end from a hardware store the size of the turbo inlet. You put a air nipple in the rubber pipe end and pressurize the system to 20 psi, you should hear the air leak then.
If you do not find a leak on the intake side, you do the same thing to the exhaust side, find a stopper and pressurize listening for the leak
Ok, Just popped off my EGR Valve and the valve is ok, but down inside the manifold is pretty nasty and wet. What's the next step gentleman (or ladies)?
Also, to go back onto an old topic. Was it decided that someone (until they can buy a delete) just unplug the EGR and leave on the throttle plate? I need to somehow fix this problem.
And no idea BPofMD, I'm some what of a diesel Newb.
Obviously I have an EGR cooler problem with the crap in side my manifold.
So how is the best way to clean that (most of the carbon is around where the valve meets the manifold)?
Is replacing the cooler the next thing I need to do. I just clean the valve.
But I just drove around the block and I had leakage come out from around the cap. Will the cap hold in the pressure or does it allow pressure out? Maybe my first fix would be just getting a new cap if it's not suppose to allow any pressure out.
