I just started two collections. One is a Morgan silver dollar collection. I'm friends with a couple of coin experts at the jewelry store where I moonlight....and at their advice, keeping them all uncirculated condition....MS-63 or better. Would make for a VERY nice and valuable collection if I ever got it finished (a couple of years and mintmarks run in the 10s of thousands of dollars for a single coin.......at least.....).
The other is a commemorative collection.....silver half dollars. Same quality. Found a nice 1892 World Expo commemorative for $40.00. With the uncirculated quality.....Pretty much on-line with a good retail price (some of these coins run in the hundreds of $$$)......even though the guy made a few $$$ off of me......
It's a slow process, but it's actually cool as Hell adding coins to the books....
I'm not of a collector of anything, but I do have a dime collection my Grandma gave me and a few silver dollars. I really like the old coins, when they were more of a work of art rather than just a profile of some dead politician.
I inherited a coin collection from my granddad - my folks threw in some coins they had. I haven't had time to go through it all and catalog it but there are some interesting coins in the batch including a pile of uncirculated coins from 1963-64 (pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, & half dollars); a full set of proof statehood quarters (each in its own container); Morgan dollars (my granddad had a thing for Morgans, apparently); silver certificates and United States Notes; a Silver Eagle (bullion), and some fake double eagles my granddad got scammed with; other miscellaneous coins such as "Mercury" dimes, steel Lincoln pennies, a wartime Jefferson nickel from '43, Bicentennial quarters, and Eisenhower Bicentennial dollars.
There's nothing there that's going to make me rich and, someday, I might finish going through it all LOL...
Used to collect them when I was a kid. Being local you might can appreciate this. I got one of the Meck Dec commemorative coins when they were issued in 1975. I think they were a very limited issue but seemed to be a big deal back then to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence.

1964 and prior?
90% silver (more or less).

Me too.
AND they actually had intrinsic value. Then came the great debasement of 1965 when the Gov't gave up any pretense of circulating sound money.......and dimes and quarters went to cupro-nickel......and half-dollars had their silver content cut in half......then ended by 1970.
Probably your grandparents (along with many others) saw the writing on the wall and started to save the old dimes, quarters, and half dollars (pre -1965).
Morgan dollars (my granddad had a thing for Morgans, apparently)
Guilty......
I think they're MUCH nicer than the Peace dollars.

Hey. If you run across a copper 1943 penny....give me a call and I'll send you .02-cents (that's a 100% profit!!!)......

You never know. Got the 'bible'? (A Guide Book Of United States Coins)....
Terry. If you did have a real one (they're counterfeited a lot), you'd probably have enough money to purchase FTE from Internet Brands.......There's only a few known to exist.
