Most transmissions have a vent to the atmosphere so pressure doesn't build up inside. If that vent were to be plugged or otherwise became inoperable then pressure could build up. Speedo cable might be a path of least resistance. What transmission do you have? I know the NP435 4-speed has a fairly large vent and I can point you toward where it should be. Others might chime in for other transmission types.

Can you reach up behind the cluster and feel oil around where the cable attaches to the speedo head? It should generally be almost bone dry on the outside of that connection. If there's much oil there it's probably getting inside the speedmeter, too, but hope not.
