I think I need to lubricate my speedometer cable, since it squeaks after 10MPH or so. Is this possible?

Thanks,

I remember disconnecting the cable from the speedometer and tapeing a funnel to the end so that oil would work its way down.

It worked for me one time on an old f-100.

Or another way, (I think) is to pull the cable out of the sheath and clean/lube it. I never tried the second one it might be a be a real pain getting it back togther.

Thanks, CAT! I'm assuming this involves just removing the dashboard to access the connection point of the cable. Am I correct? (I haven't checked my Haynes manual, yet. I'm in the middle of a move.)

Thanks,

try just tightening the conection on the tranny. If that dont work then dump some oil down the cable.

when you remove the instrument cluster, be careful not to break the tiny plastic tube that houses the teeny tiny cable for the gear position indicator (if you have an automatic).

i always have trouble getting the cable off the speedometer. i think you have to squeeze the white plastic housing that holds the cable to the indicator.

Sorry to hear your moving (joking), Thats a ton of work (serious). I hope you are moving for positive reasons. It might be awhile before you get to open that haynes manual. Don't lose it in the move or you will be out about $15.

To answer your question: It has been about 20 years since I did it, but as I remember it was pretty simple and easy to figure out. It was a 72 F-150 so it might not be set up the same way as yours.

I think the cable just unscrewed from the back, just get a light and reach up there and take it off. I could be wrong about this. It has been awhile. I think some of the others guys here might be able to tell you more. Looking at only210miles comments brings back some memories of playing with that the gear position cable. That may have been the cable lube episode or a another repair my memory is not what it used to be. I'm sure you will be able to work it out. Just remember to tie the cable up high so that gravity can get the lube where it needs to go.

We've got the bulk of our move completed. Yes, it's for good reason. We're just upsizing and taking advantage of the low rates and excellent real estate market here in Jacksonville. Now, I'll finally have an enclosed 2-car garage I've longing for!! I just hope my LWB F-150 will fit in there. I think it will be tight, but I can squeeze it in. I just have to remove the hitch insert. And, I've already seen my Haynes Manual through the top of a box, so it's safe. I just hope that stowaway mouse in our PODS unit didn't chomp on it like she did our sofa. (I know it's a she because she left 2 babies behind.)

Thanks for all your help...

3in1 oil works great for speedos no need for a funnel use liberally.

Just lubed mine recently. No need to remove cluster, just get under the dash and find the cable. there is a quick disconnect so you can just press in and pull it off without unscrewing anything. I pulled the center cable out of the sheath, covered it in cable lube grease, and it slid back together fine, but maybe I got lucky.

Nickmobile, Good input. Especially the cable lube grease referance. No offense to djd67 but penetrating oil will (generally speaking) usually work for a while then either stop working because it is so thin or attracts dust and dirt and makes the problem worse.
