Wink Relocating Trailer plug??

-I'm thinking about relocating my 7 way trailer plug from the bracket UNDER the bumper and enlarging one of the license plate light holes and mounting it there.

Anyone done this? will it being on an angle cause any trouble when turning?

I keep backing into low stuff with mine and would like to try & protect it some.

I broke out the hole saw and mounted my seven way plug in the bumper.
Granted it's an '08 bumper, but it's a solid mount, and I have zero issues with the placement.
I think your idea will work just fine Rick.

Just make sure it will allow the trailer plug itself to clear any trailer hitches when you turn.

Rick I have my 7way plug where my left license plate light would be, it was like that when I bought my truck. And I have not had any problems towing with it in that location. The only thing I don't like about it there is at night the one license plate light doesn't light up the license plate very well. I am worried that some cop might use it as a reason to pull me over.

Now it might be a problem if you had a ball on the bumper but as long as you have a reciever I don't see having a problem.

Hey Thanks Guys!! I kind of hate to do such a permanant thing like this, but in the long run I think it will look neater and be better protected. I am also thinking about getting the later style with the 4 flat connector built in while I'm at it.

Frank: What size hole saw does it take for this?

Ed: I thought about the lights too.....If I do this mod I think I'll get a nice bright LED bulb for the right side light-that should pretty much illuminate the plate pretty well.

So there is no problem with it being on an angle as long as I have enough length of wire and don't (obviously) put a ball on the bumper (which is stupid, I might add)

I wouldn't worry about it being permanent Rick. The seven way is a permanent part of your truck anyhow, so why not !
I can't recall what size hole saw I used, but I have a bulky aftermarket plug, so yours may be different.

Rick I like the idea of installing the late model plug with the 4 blade built in. I have to carry a adaptor for the 4 blade plug. And I agree about the ball on the bumper being stupid. But some people do that. Now as far as the light goes I have tired a LED that only had the led's on the top of the socket and did NOT work well. I was going to try the 194 LED with the led's on the side next which might work better. Also was thinking of using a different bigger light housing off other truck bumper. Just haven't gotten around to it. The other thing I was thinking of trying was the LED licence plate bolts. Please post a photo when you are done

I have also considered installing the plug so its concelled behind the tag-in BACK of bumper......a guy I worked for years ago did this on an 80s Jeep Wagoneer-he didn't want the plug to show at all.....kinda hard to get to though....he put it on an angle....

Frank, I'll have to go aftermarket with the plug with the 4 flat connector I think........I've got the adaptor but that thing is kind of a PIA sometimes.....

I've also got a dedicated 12volt 10ga fused line coming directly from the battery for my scooter lifts.......I've seen plugs for that too....might try & incorporate that into my relocation.......

I relocated mine to the same spot your talking about. I got an aftermarket plug and installed it in there as well.

Greatest plug mod ever! I shortened the wires underneath and tucked everything up nice and tight, and it solved the problem that I was having about gravel always tearing up the plug and wiring.

I just used a die grinder and ground till it fit, took very little time, easy mod.

Sometimes they are different but one that I mounted recently was a 2" hole saw.
