I often hear a grinding noise after hitting bumps in the road. The noise only stops when i pull over and stop or if i switch to four wheel drive high range. any help would be appreciated.
Where is the location of the grinding noise? Front, back, left, right, is it in the wheels, engine etc? If it is in the wheels could be alot of things like a brake dragging, or wheel bearings. My friend has a '02 Explorer and has replaced every wheel bearing at least once and some twice and has only had the car himself for 4-5 years... Give more info and will try to throw out ideas.
It seems to be coming from the front end or the wheels. I just dont understand why it stops when i shift into high range four wheel drive. could it be the hubs?
Well if its a bearing jack up the truck and see if there is excess play in the hub, and spin it and listen for grinding. If its possibly a cv joint look at the boots to see if they are torn and when driving steer lock to lock and see if there is clicking while moveing. As far as 4x4 hub I am new to four wheel so hopefuly someone else knows your 4x4 system well to help you
