I have a 1999 V-10. So the other day I went to start the truck and when I turned the key the dash lights started blinking and chattering like the battery was dead, however it turned over. But upon starting the engine was missing and black smoke was coming out the tailpipe. Not good. So I turned it off and tried again same. Let it sit for a minute and tried again and it started fine. Check the codes nothing. Driving today to work and it did it again, loss of power, started missing and died. Turned it off and started up again all good. Check battery and determined it was bad so i replaced it. Driving home all was good then once again the same. each time no codes. I would suspect a ground but can't find one. Any suggestions.
Yep, Definitely sounds like a bad ground, or other connection.
The best and most thorough way to find the problem (and probably a few more...) is to follow every wire from the battery to its' termination point, either at the frame or on the engine.
Make sure you also check the ground straps. (not sure how many on a V10, I know of 2 for sure on the 5.4)
Agree , ck grounds and battery connections . My Mounty did something like that . It was only a bad battery for me . Also ck charging ckt. just for grins . Just a thought . Good luck !

So im out looking and have noticed a few things. First no bad grounds yet....still looking. Noticed that the tube that comes off the front of the throttle body and goes to the passenger side valve cover is worn and looks like when you suck through s straw and can't get anything out, all collapsed. Don't know if this is related or not. So im out checking, truck is idling and everything is good, then without warning guages go beserk, and dies. start it up very rough, smells like sulfer. Turn off and on several times and now all is good. Anyone know where the main grounds are on the chasis. Man this is trying on a guy...... Anyone want to come and help?
Fix your vac leak for lean run . That is common issue . It won't cause your battery issue . Oh , looking will not test grounds . Get a DMM and test them . A good old analog meter can do it if you have one . Hard to find a good one anymore .
So does anyone think this could be a bad PCM, or ECM , I forget which. I know they don't go bad very often. The truck has 145000 miles (just getting broke in). Still looking.
so after hours and hours of tracking wires and checking grounds I decided to pull the PCM and guess what I found.... a super chip. The guy I bought the truck from 5 years ago neglected to tell me it was chipped. Pulled the chip and she's running again perfect. thanks everyone
