Hi all, we are currently trying to diagnose new probs with my dads 1995 P' Stroke. This is his first diesel and it has been nothing but a pain. We have owned it for 7 days now and it has been broke down for 6 of them. Different prob every day. Today he went out to start it and the batteries were dead. We identified the bad battery and replaced it. Yesterday he started out for work and the check engine light came on and it lost almost all power. Got home and restarted it and was fine. Today when we started it up it did exactly the same thing but now it won't go away. It starts, runs fine for about 2 secs. and the check engine light comes on and it starts knocking and missing. You can floor the pedal and it does almost nothing. When you let off it idles about like a 2cyl. John Deere and dies. Starts right back up and the same exact thing.
Sorry for the book but he is really disappointed w/ the truck and we don't know where to start looking.
Knowing that code would really help. There are a few things you can look at just to be checking. The 2 wire plugs that go into each valve cover gasket should be unplugged and inspected for burnt pins. Very common. The idm could possibly have water in it, happens. It's on the drivers side fender. You can take it off and shake it just to see.
Without knowing the code, I'm just giving you some free things you can check that can cause a bad miss. One more thing, both batteries should be replaced together, or the old one will run the new one down to where its at real fast. Good luck, I'll bump you up for more help hopefully.
Darin is on point here. The engine code will point you in what ever direction it takes to get it fixed. With out that you are not going to get very far without random dumb luck just throwing parts at it.
The idm full of water is a free test...fuel pressure with cheap tire gauge is almost free..check oil condition AND level=free...
In reference to the wire plugs that go through the valve covers the pins and plugs look fine. I have read issues regarding the IPR and IPC having problems. I understand how to check for water in the IDM but where is the IPC and IPR and how do you check them? Could they even be related to my issues? I would love to pull the codes but I don't own a scan tool and nobody in my small town has one either. Would unplugging the injector harnesses at the valve covers one at a time to isolate which bank is not firing help diagnose the issue. Just trying to think of ways to help you guys.

ICP is in the drivers side head towards the front, with a 3 wire plug in it. You can unplug the icp and look for oil in it, but I don't think that is your problem. Ipr is on the back side of the high pressure oil pump (hpop), with two wires running to it. I don't think that is your problem either. I need to go re-read the original post.
Ok, without that code I'm really pi$$ing in the wind here. I understand you don't have one, but it's kind of needed. Where are you?
You can unplug one harness at a time if it runs good enough to do so. One more thing you can do is take the oil fill cap off and smell down in the motor. I know it sounds dumb, but if you smell burnt plastic, you have some under valve cover harness issues.
