As I was driving home from work last night (Thurs), I stopped at a red light, and the engine light on the dash came on, the truck started shuddering, engine was missing, and it had no power. I limped through the intersection and pulled over. I shut the truck off for several minutes and then restarted it and everything has been fine since then. I have only driven about 15 - 20 miles since this issue and everything seems fine. Any ideas? All my other guages seemed ok. Oil pressure was good, volts very good, no issues with temp. Please throw some ideas at me. Thanks.
FEJ: Get the codes read by someone that has the proper reader for your 7.3.
It could be the wires where they go through the valve covers.
There will be someone else jumping in soon, but this will get the brain started. Jim
Primary suspect is going to be the Under Valve Cover Harness. Sometimes they work themselves loose and the lucky ones will get a symptom like you describe before the plug comes completely loose and the entire bank is dead. If you can get your codes read by a scanner designed for these engines then that would be the best place to start. Post back the codes and we can help you from there.
If you don't have access to a code scanner, then I'd suggest that you look under your valve covers to make sure the harnesses are plugged in nice and tight. It's a much easier job then it looks. The passenger side valve cover comes off without having to move the A/C. A while back someone came up with a nifty fix that requires two quarters. You might as well do that while you are under.
If you open up the valve cover and the plugs look nice and tight then you might want to check the pins on the connectors to make sure that none of them are burned. Sometimes the center (power) pin gets burned and it also will show the symptoms you described.
