Can anyone tell me how the 4 wheel drive system works. My dealer is a moron.

I think you are asking how the auto 4x4 works . To the best of my knowledge, if the front wheels slip or spin more than the a certain %, the rear axle kicks in and pulls you out of it. I'm not sure of the exact % but it is probably a revolution or 2 of the front tires, or at least that is what i have found out with my escape.
