That doesn't rule it out though. The core transmission case *could* be the same but have different mounts or brackets and that would result in different part numbers. Those mounts and brackets could be swapped.
We'll have to see if someone who's gone down that path chimes in because I honestly don't know.
Dead easy if you want your currently 4WD escape to become 2WD, swap the trans and remove the front-to-rear driveshaft, rear differential and driveshafts and voila.
If you want it to remain 4WD then you need to assess whether the 2WD trans can have the takeoff for the rear axle swapped to it from the 4WD - I'm literally half a world away from my workshop manual at the moment but happy to look it up in a week when I get back home...tbh even if technically possible I wouldn't mess with it, I'd simply source a 4WD trans if the conversion to 2WD isn't what you intended.
