2004 Explorer flooding?

2004 Explorer flooding?
My wife called me at work this morning and said she started the explorer and backed out of her parking space, came to a stop, shifted to drive, and it died. She shifted to park and tried to restart it with no luck. Her dad came to help and apparently started and ran fine, however she said they smelled gas fumes. I am assuming it flooded somehow? Anyone ever have this issue? Its got about 80,000 miles on it and I doubt has ever had the spark plugs changed. Would this help?
