I am just wondering if anyone has built there own sap evaporator to make maple syrup. I have used a turkey fryer in the past but had burned up so much fuel. I would like to build somthing that i could heat with wood.
Sounds like you need to do a little research. I don't recall the precise numbers, but I seem to remember that 100 gallons of sap yields one gallon of syrup. That means you have to boil off 99 gallons of water, which requires a fair amount of energy, no matter the fuel. Heating anything with wood tends to be an inefficient proposition (though it may be inexpensive if you have lots of time on your hands) compared to refined fuels.
it is 40 gallons sap to make one gallon maple syrup. I have been doing alot of research and hve been looking into welding up some sort of rocket stove. They are very efficient and hot wood buring stoves. I am hoping to maybe find someone who has build somthing like this.
normal batch was 15 gallons in the 20 gallon pot, and that would take on average a day to boil down to 3-4 gallons.
then the first boil would get strained and go into the carriage house to wait for more first boil.
after we had 3 first boils, we would do a second boil down to again around 3-4 gallons, and strain that. then it would go into the house to get a finish boil down.
we tapped 25 trees per year, and ended up with about 2 gallons of finished product each year.
it was a lot of work, but well worth it.
most of those trees are gone now though due to development.
