VW TDI clutches do the same thing. The DMFs come apart at high miles and my work sells a kit to replace it with a SMF. You will hear the gears "rattling" with the clutch not down. There is NO down side to this. It's just a bit of noise, as I tell the customers: You probably won't be able to hear it over the sound of the engine anyway
Sounds like the same kit I got off ebay I remember it being about the same price and wondering what the seller was smoking...
I put that on ummm back in June I think? With the exception of the gear roll-over, I've had no issues. x3 on the hydraulics, unless they're in bad shape, you'll be fine. Matter of fact, the pedal will by much lighter, I can't believe the difference it made! The only time I hear the gear noise is sometimes idling, and at low speeds, when the engine is under ~1,000 RPM (normally when pulling away from a light, or in parking lots). At normal speed the gear noise is gone. Matter of fact, my tires drown out the engine noise most of the time... but thats another story!
Oh, make sure you clean up and lube the quill (where the throwout bearing rides). It tends to gunk up and can cause increased pedal effort/shifting issues. For the cover plate, junkyard or someone on here is probably your only option.
Blast huh....lol Oh, to have that youngster enthusiasm again..... LMFAO! I've done this several times. I have learned a few things, broke a few things and cussed LOTS of things. This site helped me tremendously, now I can honestly drop my zf in 1.5 hours and that is slow compared to some on here. LOL
Finally got around to changing out that clutch. The LUK system went in without a hitch. The harbor freight tranny jack performed admirably. Much easier than the last tranny I dropped and decided I could just "lift it out", and this was on a volvo 240 which, because of the jack stands I had at the time only gave me minimal clearance, but I digress.
This eliminated a TON of noise. The springs were shot to heck in the DMF and stuff was falling out of it as I pulled it out (that sucker is heavy!!!). Lubed up the throwout bearing shaft and it shifts like a new truck now. Gear roll is MINIMAL, not nearly as bad as I was expecting. Decided to replace the old carrier/center support bearing and the u-joints on the driveshaft while I had it out. Still a little concerned about not having the inspection plate down there, but it sounds like a lot of guys run their truck without it. IF someone has one they'd like to sell, let me know!
Thanks for the help. Learned a lot. Cleaning up took up about half the time I spend on the project.
