Coolant Flush - Convert Coolant to CAT ELC 1
Just completed a long process of flushing engine to change coolants. Used Restore and Restore Plus, Distilled water for a total of 16 cycles of flushing, filling, back-flushing heater core, additional flushing of radiator. Always drained both engine block plugs (Fumoto Valve on Passenger drain plug). Observed lots of sand until about 13 of so flush cycle. The 14 and 15 flush cycle were real clear and not really any noticeable sand. Used 80 gals of Distilled Water. Driving 788 miles, installed new t-stat and radiator hoses. New filter at end for coolant bypass filter. Pulled t-stat after about the 1st flush. Keeping track of all money spent came out to an unbelievable $600. If anyone would like a breakdown let me know. The good part is the engine is very clean. Deltas (ECT 190 and EOT 208) after the new coolant and flushing cycles indicate that a new oil cooler is next.

yeah, i just did the same thing. I bout 30gal of distilled water. I just used hose water to do the whole flushing. Going to do 3 distilled water flushes once its all back together from doing other mods. I just let the truck idle and high idle with the hose feeding hose water into the truck until no more soapy stuff came of the engine block. I noticed the radiator still had the soapy stuff so i pulled the upper and lower hoses off and then petcock and stuck the hose in the top and let it run for about an hour with the truck off for obvious reasons lol. i also used the restore and restore plus. took the better part of a day to do it and a wet *** lol.

I did the switch to Cat EC--1 but opted for Cascade only and two 55 gallon drums of distilled water with a transfer pump to get it out of the barrels.
That was around 9,000 miles ago and my delta temps are still 4-5 degrees, the one bonus I did get out of it was now my heater will light my feet on fire since using the Cascade ??
gwg42: what was the oil cooler temps before doing the VC9 flush ??

I did the same thing though I used CLR in my flush and then just did distilled water. I decided to use my current oil cooler as a sacrificial lamb as I'm going to be studding the truck anyways. I put a coolant filter on and have been catching a fair amount of casting sand in it. I'm hoping that's what the oil cooler in there now is doing as well.

In response to Mhatlen: On an 20 mile run on 2/7 the ECT was 194 and EOT was 208. On 1/19 ECT was 190 and EOT was 207. Been about the same since buying the SGII in late Oct of last year. Don't use the truck as a daily driver, but do take it out 1 or 2 times a week and drive to adjacent towns that result in a 40-50 mile round trip. I call them exercise runs, they are mostly around 60MPH; so never push the truck too hard. Planning a long trip in summer with 5th wheel, so plan on doing all work needed in March/April.
