96 Explorer E4OD problem

I have a 96 explorer 4.0L, E4OD automatic that doesn't like hot weather. We had the transmission rebuilt a while ago (20K miles)but there is a lingering problem that shows up only when the summer heat arrives. We live in AZ and when the outside temp gets up into the 90's or higher the transmission chatters and begins to slip. My guess is that something is expanding and sticking (solenoid maybe?) due to the higher temps. Any suggestions? Can I safely add a synthetic addative that would improve internal lubrication and improve the heat tolerance of the tranny?

96 Explorer E4OD problem

I'm curious too I have similar problems in the summers here ... though it doesn't get as hot as AZ... been there... hehe.

Posted a thread on Lucas tranny fix additive but no replies yet. just wondering if anyone her have used it before.

Despite the testimonials on their web site: www.lucasoil.com I kinda don't trust them ....

Leo. (96' explorer 4.0 L, 5 speed overdrive) Can't remember which one ... got to check.

I tend to be very skeptical about the claims of some of the aftermarket products too. There are a lot of products out there that make some outrageous statements. I just hesitate to put them in the tranny without getting positive feedback from people that have successfully tried them. Still searching for an answer!!

96 Explorer E4OD problem

first of all, the explorer never came with the E4OD. You have either the 4R55E or the 5R55E, that is a newer version of the A4LD transmission. If you have a automatic 5 speed then it is the 5R55E, and if only 4 speed then the 4R55E.

Second, check and see if you have a transmission cooler, if not I would highly recommend getting one. Do you still have a warranty from the rebuild? If so take it back! If not have it diagnosed. You could also have a transmission service done, but not just a flush, heat is the number one enemy of fluid/oil. I always service my transmissions before the summer towing season starts, of course I do my own work so its not that expensive.

Hope any of this helps,

Smile Transmission Cooler does the trick!

Thanks for the advice. I finally had time to work on our Explorer. I changed the "T" fluid and filter and installed a cooler. It's been about a month now, we've had some really hot weather that has reached into the triple digits and and the transmission seems to be functioning OK.
