Im on my second zf5 and on my way home today it started making a weird noise when i took off in second gear and found out it makes this clicking almost grinding noise in 1st 2ed and 3rd so now im on another search for a 4x4 zf5....and people wanna say their unbreakable haha yeah right lol
Have you tried checking the fluid? Mine was full of water for a year while being driven and abused. and its fine. I know another behind a 400hp cummins thats does NOTHING but tow 15-25k lbs. Both have over 300k, the one behind the CTD has 400k
Grinding noise? Do you have a single mass flywheel? If so your probably hearing gear rollover. They do sometimes make some hellacious noises, almost like a giant coffee grinder without the factory dual mass flywheel.
You took out something on the counter shaft? Might not be it but i think thats right idk, something in there all the <1:1 gears are kinda on their own, then 4th (1:1) is its own deal, the 5th and reverse are on the same deal in some way.
I dont know anything about transmissions really, just trying pass on what the trans guy told me when i did the same thing to my TK5
I don't know how thick royal purple is, but you CANNOT run thick oil in a ZF5! You must run ATF, and nothing but! Anything else won't lube it properly as the ZF has very very tight clearances.
But you say your on your 2nd tranny? So the one you have now is a used one from where....? so who knows what kind of life it had prior..... not alot of people know how to smoothly operate a standard, and alot of people love abusing 'em to. Especially in a 4x4...
My 1990 4x4 F250 7.3 has 377k miles on the original ZF, clutch and DMF! The DMF is done though. It knocks harder than an old Chevy 305 when you shut 'er off!
they all brake.make no mistake.the old t-18/19's were good trans too (minus od) back in the day,but you had clutch, bearing, and other issues to contend with.non of them run issue free forever.most of the zf5s now all have many miles on them, kinda have to expect these things.
i'll be chasing a converter slip code for the third time since ownership again today in my auto.that's like averaging once a year for the damn nag.they're all old trucks/parts.they all brake guys.been there done the manual trans several times.repairing those or an autos electrical issues, take your pick.neither is a picnic.
iv got a bad feeling about my solenoid pack in my auto this time too.not near as bad as swapping out a clutch or anything.not labor nor cost wise, but still won't exactly make me smile either lol.who knows maybe a bad relay and 1 min of my time and she's all fixed.i'll know after a few more cups of joe and thinking about it for a while more first.
good luck.hope ya just find something like a throw out bearing squealing at ya or something.doesn't sound very promising though.
