Preface: This issue can/has occurred whether I'm using the CD player or the radio.
The left channel of my factory audio receiver (radio, cassette and single CD) barely works some of the time. Other days you would never know there is a problem. When the unit is acting up (barely hear left channel) I'll work the balance to full right channel position and things sound as they should and then I'll work the balance to full left channel position and you can barely hear the radio/CD.
Is an amplifier the problem or the head unit? Since I can still hear the left channel (barely) when this anomaly occurs, my intuition tells me the head unit is functioning properly but the amplifier (left channel) is failing to perform as it should. I am not an electronics guru, nor did I stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night! All inputs/help are greatly appreciated.
Not as of yet. This weekend I'll put balance to full left and sit in the front seat, back seat and way back seat. If all speakers barely play then it may point to an amp that I saw pictured in an exploded ford parts diagram on fordparts.com. I don't think all speakers on same side would quit working at the same time.

I have a similar problem with my '01. Also left channel. The condition is extremely intermittent. Happens for a short period while driving and then corrects itself.
This is the type of ghost I hate the most. I can't recreate it when the truck is parked, there are usually other repairs/maintenance items that are time better spent and the problem doesn't effect the way the truck runs.
Has the condition worsened on your truck since it started or is it just as occasional?
Seems to have gotten worse over time. It's like sometimes I don't notice (I'm not paying attention to it) so I don't know if it's working correctly or not. Then other times the lack of left channel sound sticks out like a sore thumb. Have you ever had your driver's glass replaced?

What you describe is the same as my '01. The truck is my wife's daily driver and she doesn't listen to the radio. My exposure to the problem is limited but enough to recognize it.
The windshield was replaced nine years ago when I purchased the truck. There was a bad scratch in front of the driver that necessitated the replacement. There has never been a leak from the windshield. The leaky rear hatch glass is a different story...
Twice in the past, I tried to roll down my driver's window while it was really cold overnight (well below freezing) and the window separated from the track. I just wonder if when the shop fixed the window they may have inadvertently messed up a speaker wire or something. Long shot, I know, but I really believe something inside the pre-amp left channel has gone south. I'll troubleshoot this problem someday (too busy for next few months) in the future and will report my findings in this thread. In my youth, this issue would have definitely demanded a quick fix. Nowadays, I relish being able to hear!
Alloro you are correct again! My front left speaker was bad. My factory setup was just HU and speakers and 6-disc changer in middle storage compartment. LF speaker ohmed out as bad. Purchased a pair of Pioneer TS-G6844R speakers at Best Buy ($50). Installed and it worked!!!! Then it stopped working AGAIN. I felt surely it was the HU. Upon re-inspection, I had not secured the extra wire from the new connector and when I rolled down the window (it was warm here yesterday) it pulled the connectors apart!
