How intriguing this little agruement is. So, the idea to take a truck that was NEVER manufactured as a 4x2 unit and deliberately change it to 4x4 bothers some people...how odd. I wonder what kind of reaction one would get if the idea for adding 4x4 to say a pre-60's Ford truck would be. I mean, I would imagine many would consider that a cool idea. Yeah make something that was never 4x4 into a 4WD vehicle, cool! So why would making a Bronco (that was NEVER manufactured as 4x2) into a 4x2 vehicle be any less unique and cool an idea? True, I wouldn't trade my 4WD for the world and thats why I bought the Bronco but, to have something as unique as a 4x2 version would seem to be just as cool as having the only '52 Ford 4x4. Just another $0.02 to add to the conversation.
Well, yeah you know, maybe some people won't agree with my ideas, but that's what makes everyone unique. I mean hell, yeah I plan on converting my Bronco into a 2wd, but guess what? I have a 95 F-350 PSD, that I drive everyday, and it's a 2wd also. But, I'm doing a front-axle conversion so I can put some 22.5 or probably some 24.5 inch semi-wheels under it. I mean, yeah I'm going for the lifted look, but not the 4x4 capability. I mean, yeah most people would probably say why bother, but I'm gonna do what makes me happy.I mean, I'm not doggin on 4x4s at all, and the Bronco I'm doing this to is a base model XL that I got for like $3000. I mean, yeah I'm smart enough to to doing anything like that to a nice Eddie Bauer.
What this all boils down to is personal preference, I am not ruining my truck by converting to 2wd, I am making it more capable for the type of offroading that I do. I just laugh at all the posts that think this such a ridiculous thing to do. I remember my dad saying, "why the hell would you lift a truck" for him a stock truck does everything he needs it to do, for me an equal length I beam setup with 20 inches of travel will do everything I am looking for in my truck. Dont bag on me about my prefernce of offroad trucks because you dont want to get me started on how much I luuuv pro comp/skyjacker/superlift and ohh yeah gotta luuuv those body lifts too.
As long as he has it out there in the Desert enjoying it and beating the other guys have at it. I was thinking about buying an 87 here that is for sale for $500 with a 5.8 in it and having some fun withit. Also I thought that Ford was supposed to come out with some 4x2 Broncos in the early 90's even read about it in a magazine and it was an Orange and White one in the article. Just like Ford was supposed to do the Excursion in 2 door and didn't.
Well, actually, I know of a shop that made their own 2-dr Excursion. It looks pretty sick, but then kinda weird at the same time. I think there are pics of it on the shop that built it's website. The site is www.totallypolished.com
yeah, please dont get off the subject with a lowered truck, to all these guys that are beating me up by going with 2WD, at least I am not doing this to a Bronco
Building a 2wd prerunner out of a Bronco is a plan I've had for a while, too. Finances are putting that on hold right now.
I like the equal length I-beams - maybe lower the spring buckets a little bit for lift. I was thinking of going with a four link of some kind for the rear - would probably run the shocks up through the "bed" in the back. Tie it into a cage, and box it off for noise and dust, etc.
I grew up down in San Diego (going to Ocotillo Wells, glamis, Gordons Well.... miss the desert up here).
I'd put a locker in the rear, convert it to disc brakes, qand if you put a slight body lift on it you could even slide the engine back a touch for weight.
My other thought would be to leave the transfer case in there - with a locker and low range you'll go just about anywhere.
Msautry, you are feeling me, thanks for backing up my plan, I am definatly going to go with equal lentgth I beams but instead of using a coil and coil bucket, I am going to run 3.0 King coil overs, then the lift would be adjustable and be able to accomodate so much travel, the rear I am either going to go 4 link or do long travel springs like Nationals, or Deavers, the shocks will definatly go throught the floor and tie into the cage we are planning, the question is do I want 18 inches of travel with leafs or 24 inches of travel via 4 link? mainly $$ is the issue but hopefully I can pull off the 4 link, I live in San Diego so Ocotillo, Glamis, and Gordons are my back yard, got the locker, working on disc brakes, and the E4OD and transfer case is going to have to make way for a race prepped C6
