1952 F1 Fan Hub Assy - Cratered and took out Radiator

So the fan hub flew off the shaft and went through the radiator two weeks ago on a Sunday ride. Since the hub was put togehter by the previous owner I had just bolted it on and oiled it till the oil came out the rear shaft with a 30W oil.

So now I purchased a rebuilt from C&G. The internals of old hub including shaft are toast. Looks like internals were made from powdered metal.

So I am going back together this weekend.

My questions are:

1. What is the torque spec for Fan to Fan Hub Assy #12-24 bolts. These specs are not in shop manual. On the internet one site says 25 IN LBS. What are you doing?

2. I am using 30 weight oil book calls for 20 weight but only 20 weight oil avialable is 0-20W. I hear some people using 90W Gear Oil. Whats the best lubrication some of you more experience folks are using to keep this hub on the shaft.

3. Since the bearing is this casing inside fan hub is anyone using an additive in the oil like teflon to make hub last longer.

All comments are appreciated. I had only put about 300 miles on engine after installing Fan Hub Assy. Oil must have drip out. I am going to have start oiling everything on motor before we go for rides it looks like. The only positive is I now have a new 4 core radiator from Coolcraft to put in this weekend. It been an expensive learning experience.

Use loctite on the screws. I don't know but 25 in-lbs sounds light to me, I would gauge from past experience.

Failures on these are pretty rare (you just got "lucky"!) so I wouldn't obsess over oiling. The proper procedure is to put in something like 3 tablespoons of oil, leave the plug in overnight, then remove the plug and rotate the hub to let the excess oil drip out of the plug hole. Basically you're soaking the oilite bearings (bushings) in the hub. The owner's manual details the procedure. I bet you can find non-detergent 20 wt at a hardware store.

OUCH! I feel your pain though.......
Many years ago I had the main generator/fan stud shear off ('51 F-1 w/V8) while driving down the road.....fan, genny, and the whole works into the radiator.
Not a fun day.....

You could use ISO 32 hydraulic oil too. Easily found at many agricultural stores or oil suppliers. Today's hydraulic oil is better than motor oils of the 50s.
