Within the past 5 months? I would find the battery to be dead when I tried to start it.
I'm not leaving lights on or any accessories on when I turn it off. I don't notice any signs of the battery slowly dying, it just seems to suddenly happen.
The first time it happened, the guy at AutoZone said it was a bad Voltage Regulator, so I charged the battery and replaced the regulator and it seemed to fix the problem for a little over 2 months. It happened again and I got it checked again and the battery (less than a year old) had a bad cell. I got that replaced and everything was fine and dandy for a little more than a month then it happened again. I took it in today and the guy said it was the voltage regulator again and he said that I should look for a regulator that was for a specific amperage other than the 38, 42, 52, 55, 60, 61 Amp one that I have currently.
Is it really the voltage regulator or could it be something else, like the alternator?
Hate to say it , you need someone better than a parts store flunkey to diag. your charging system .Ck for amp draw , ck charge output . If it happens only after sitting , you most likely have an amperage draw .
If you are using anything but a Motorcraft or Autolite regulator, get used to it. I once went through several from NAPA, Standard Ignition and Carquest over a couple year period, never had one last more than a few months and some only a few days. I got a Motorcraft and it lasted at least 10 years until the truck was parked.
Best thing you can do is switch to a later alternator. I've been using the Ford 3G. Easy to hook up and 95 amps at idle. Lokk for them on 90s V6 engines like Taurus. Those have the proper mounting configuration.

Yeah, I'm using the AutoZone brand voltage regulator.
Dorito, Does your truck have an after market sound system. My son had a similar problem which caused the battery to go down. Did you ever try removing the fuses to see if that keeps the battery up. It is also possible that the alternator can cause these problems. Just like someone else posted those azone guys are not the brightest bulb on the tree.
Good hunting, Kenny
Have you checked the battery voltage while at idle and say 1500 rpm just to see what's going on the your charging system is ok. Where all the replacement regulators the transistor type?? And do you drive on many dirt bumpy roads. Yrs ago there was a company making Life-time maintenance free that had a high failure rate on roads that were not smooth as glass. Shorted cells out sold by (Penny's) maybe a few of you guys remember that. They soon stop selling them but still had to honor the warranty. To this day the Battery manufacturer still honoring the warranty of those old battery. My ex mother in law calls corp headquarters general manger and bitches about her lifetime battery replacement has once again failed that I keep installing into her once new 1962 Mercury every 4-5 yrs she gets a free battery out of them..
Well got side track but you see where I was going with the battery..orich
