Wait....where should the check valve be? Square hole on the left side of the block under the front cover? Or in the front cover....

I'm having a brain fart. Sorry for the mix up
On the 94.5-95 the drain back valve in built into the hpop

Square hole on the left should have a check vale in it coming from the mounting engine side of oil filter mounting head
Round hole on the right should have a valve to

Round hole with valve

I'm following this one also. Mike you need to fly up to ellenburg, to give a hand. Wish we all could. Great extra project. Wasn't it honed out once already if he reringed it?

Doesn't look like it was honed when the most recent set of rings went in. No crosshatch at all.

Thanks for posting up the pics! I get more out if this than diagrams.

Will a later front cover and hpop slap right on and eliminate the check valves in those locations?

Yes you can. If it was me I'd do that.

Yep. That would be the plan. Anyone have an opinion on what is on the pistons? This motor hasnt ran supposedly since the new pistons rings and rods were put in it. I'm thinking either ether or gasoline soaked rag was used trying to start it.

If its just soot that can be cleaned off I wouldn't worry about it.

It wasnt exactly soot. There were crystals in it, and it was hard. Didnt come off much when just wiped without brake cleaner, but with brake cleaner a lot of it came off.

Gotta pull everything out of it soon and get the block to a machine shop. Fresh Hone and acid bath are desperately needed.
